Buck The Trends: Pyjamas

Submitted by Elliott James Sainsbury on May 12, 2009 – 3:15 pmNo Comment

In case you’re scratching your head and asking yourself why nobody’s out clubbing in their jim-jams, let me reassure that the pyjama trend isn’t a literal one. It takes inspiration from two sources- the toothpaste stripes and piped collars of men’s nightwear mixed with the crumpled, louche look that Lanvin and Burberry Prorsum have made so popular.

And what could be more summery than pyjamas? Think about it; PJ shirts are thinner, cooler and comfier to wear than stiff traditional shirting. Traditional pyjama detailing such as piped seams, rounded lapels, drawstring waists and grandad collars all chime with our current mode and light colours evoke that summery mood too; creams, neutrals, pale stripes and faded blues evoke a bit of a seaside feel.

Things are subtler on the ‘crumpled’ side. Designers are creating trousers, shirts and even suits from unlined silk for a draped, bohemian silhouette that recalls PJ’s. Then there’s crumpled trenchcoats and waistcoats that look like you just woke up in them and don’t give a damn; linen scarves and cardigans that create a layered effect and muted tones that, matched well, have the throw-on wearability of pyjamas.

As Lanvin’s Lucas Ossendrijver says, these clothes ‘disappear’, suggesting the ultimate in effortlessness and never shouting for attention, sitting somewhere between classic and edgy. Bizarre that it’s taken bedclothes to make this happen, but as everyone knows, you look better when you’re more relaxed. And nobody’s more relaxed than when they’re in their jim jams.
