Buckstyle DRINKS: Champagne with food

Submitted by Steve Doyle on June 18, 2009 – 1:44 pmOne Comment

We like to keep-up with food and drink trends here at Buckstyle as much as we do the trends in fashion and design. Although things move a little slower in food tastes (thankfully!), there’s no doubt, you can recall a time or even a whole era just by remembering the dishes that were popular back then; Black Forest Gateaux in the 70s, Nouvelle Cuisine in the 80s. So, what’s happening right now? One thing for sure is champagne is moving from aperitif to the main course . In France, they’ve done this for years of course. This is because the French like to enjoy themselves. We Brits still have a streak of the Puritan within when it comes to enjoyment so while the froggies across the channel enjoy all life’s little pleasures, we’d usually rather restrict ourselves all week on beans-on-toast, saving ourselves for a justified splurge of enjoyment at the weekend on everything we’ve been denying ourselves. Fortunately, at least for our mental health, this is changing, and no better example, however little, is the growing popularity of fizz with food. Mumm have come-up with a very timely website that gives lots of ideas of which champagnes to drink with what meals. Gourmet-journeys.com takes you on a trip around various cities, highlighting twists on classic dishes from each destination. The recipes are high-end, luxurious and sound utterly delicious. The champagnes to complement them are of course all by Mumm, but the ideas make a lot of sense, and the site is a lot of fun. If you cannot afford Mumm, I would advise a good Prosecco – a Seventies classic enjoying a revival after the Cava years – but the Mumm site is a good place to start.
