DSquared2 Spring/Summer 2010 Show Report
Those DSquared2 boys are never ones to take life too seriously. Last season’s 1930s meets the noughties extravaganza was a satisfying two fingers up to the recession, and this time there wasn’t much meaning- just fun, fun fun. How many designer’s shows are stuffed to the gills with such good, uplifting stuff like theirs? It’s near impossible to dislike a show that finds time to include bright massive backpacks, hats covered in badges, rain capes, Joni Mitchell singing ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ on the soundtrack, geek glasses and tasselled wellies.
Thematically it was all about camping- with an emphasis on the camp. Sleeping bags and scout patches made an appearance as models walked out of a backdrop of tents and a forest scene. It touched upon the great US outdoors via mountaineering and hiking kit, with a dollop of Glastonbury-ish festival wear. Each look was essentially composed of shirts, shorts and jackets, but styled up they became so much more. Big fistfuls of coloured bracelets, leather keyrings and chains attached to belt loops, a backpack speared through a cane umbrella, socks with Birkenstocks. It inspired you to pile it on, self-style, loosen up a bit. The colours were clever too; bright purples with green, simple plaids with earthy suede and a slew of primaries, best seen together in a deconstructed trench with leather sleeves. And this summer’s leggings-under shorts thing made a return, though this time the leggings had a more macho, underwear feel and came with pleated chino shorts.
Despite a slightly grating voiceover, Dean & Dan also have the knack for choosing the best soundtracks in the city. Alongside Joni Mitchell were George Harrison’s ‘Here Comes the Sun’, odd harmonica beatboxing and Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’, of all the things in the world. All of these made me smile, and by the time it’d ended I left the place beaming. That’s one of the core appeals of fashion, and something that DSquared2 have just naturally got.

I hate to say it but remember Puck from Real World: San Francisco? This reminds me of him. Straight down to his eyeglass frames. Ich!
