Walter Van Beirendonck Spring/Summer 2010 Show Report
The clue is in his name. The Beir part of Beirendonck came out in full force for his SS 10 effort, “WONDER”, as hairy ‘bear’ models strutted down a catwalk in the legendary designer’s clothes. Sticking to a similar palette from last season- that’s neon orange, pink and lime green, bright as candies- this time in looser-cut blazers and combat trousers. Yes, they’re “back”, this time with zipped thigh, knee and bum pockets in the shape of stars and lightning bolts.
Those sculptural pockets carried over into a series of tops with HI and Walter’s signature W on them. With the ridiculously banging rave music one of the week’s best soundtracks, there was a definite sense of early 90’s nostalgia. Plus, Walter’s colour choices- khaki green next to neon, for example- were spot on. Jumpsuits and signature t-shirts rounded things off, plus a new collaboration with Linda Farrow that saw SpongeBob-style square glasses with interchangeable lenses and plastic eyelashes on the top. Perhaps it’s a little hard to take in for the casual passer-by, but taking these elements apart there’s a lot of Walter magic to love.
